How Encouraging Others to Lead Benefits Your Business
The concept of leadership is multifaceted and extends beyond traditional ideas of being the person in control. In a recent business retreat, my business coach, Ilise Benun, defines a leader as “someone who takes responsibility for everything”
– which is a more inclusive view of leadership, emphasizing ownership and accountability.
Leadership is not limited to formal titles or positions; it can manifest in different ways and contexts. In my business, I see those in leadership, leading businesses by taking responsibility for its success and making decisions that shape its direction. However, leadership is also about how one interacts with employees, customers and vendors. How one chooses to guide and advise; solve problems; delegate; and communicate.
As a designer, I see how creativity is embraced (or not) by leaders. Creativity isn’t just a trait of those in my industry. I believe everyone is creative. The best leaders look at things with a different perspective. Creative leaders embrace change and encourage others to question why things are done a certain way, then seeks alternative ways of doing things. Creative leaders treat mistakes as part of the learning process and encourage trying new ideas, even if they fail.
Personal growth and stepping outside of one’s comfort zone are often part of the journey of becoming a leader. Leadership roles can be outside or inside of one’s work responsibilities. They can involve leading others in collaborative projects, setting expectations and establishing efficient workflows.
Leadership is not a fixed identity; it is a dynamic and evolving set of skills and traits that can be honed over time. As leadership roles are fostered in various aspects of life and business, new opportunities for growth and impact will emerge. Encouraging others to lead offers people the opportunity to approach challenges with confidence and a sense of responsibility. This can lead to even more significant achievements and positive outcomes.
