Small Marketing Tool, Big Impact
How one of the smallest sized marketing tools can make an outsized impact!
Think that business cards are no longer relevant in an increasingly digital world? Contrary to what most think, these little cards are still an important tool for networking and building relationships.
If you are in the market for new business cards, these tips can help your cards be more effective and even eco-friendly at the same time:
1. Recycled and Reusable Materials
Use recycled paper – look for card stock made from post-consumer waste or sustainably sourced materials. Or explore alternative materials like recycled plastic or other eco-friendly materials.
2. Vegetable-Based Inks
Opt for vegetable-based inks instead of traditional petroleum-based inks. Vegetable inks are more environmentally friendly and biodegradable.
3. Minimalist Design
Keep your design simple and minimalist. A clean design not only looks professional but also reduces the use of ink.
4. Smaller Size
Consider using smaller-sized cards. This reduces the amount of paper and sets your card apart.
5. Double-Sided Printing
Print information on both sides of the card to maximize the use of space and minimize paper waste.
6. Digital or QR Codes
Instead of printing all the information on the card, include a QR code that leads to your digital contact details and additional information about your business.
7. Local Printing
Using a local printing company helps reduce the carbon footprint associated with transportation of material, packing material and delivery costs.
Look for printers that have certifications such as Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or other eco-companies, ensuring that the paper comes from responsibly managed forests.
8. Bulk Ordering
Order in bulk to reduce packaging waste and lower the overall environmental impact of production.
9. Plantable Business Cards
Plantable business cards are made from biodegradable materials embedded with seeds. After use, the card can be planted, and it will grow into flowers or herbs.
Recent Real-World Project
I had the opportunity to help Michel Sales Agency create a new brand identity. After doing research into their target audience and strategy work, that led to three stylescape designs, which helped us narrow down the visual identity they were going for. Once that was completed, we focused on the marketing collateral they would need moving forward which just happened to include business cards! I was able to incorporate a few of the tips mentioned on the list above, by using recycled paper, a minimalist design, printing on both sides of the card – and we worked with a local printer that is carbon neutral.

Remember that every small step counts, and making your business cards eco-friendly is a positive contribution to sustainable business practices. Call me if you would like some help with a new design!
